Identity: Do You Know Who You Are In Christ?

by Beautifies The Meek, 6:03 PM
I have come to the realization that when you know who you are in Christ and you believe that it's true, it affects the way you dress and carry yourself. We see how the world outside of Christ dresses and acts. They act and dress that way because that is all they know! People do and believe in what they know, if folks don't know about Christ then they can't genuinely believe in him and his word. That's why it's so important to KNOW WHO YOU ARE IN CHRIST! The bible talks about being a new creature when you are saved. Being saved doesn't mean you're perfect it just means that you realize that you have a savior worthy and powerful enough to save you from your sins. declaring your salvation is just saying my works and my abilities are not enough to save my own soul from eternal damnation.

So how do we get to that place where we look and act like we know who we are in Christ?
First get to know Jesus Christ! best ways to get to know him is through his word, prayer, and tribulation. I say tribulation because that is where I get to know God for who he is for myself! In your toughest trials and circumstances is where he can show you that he is ALL POWERFUL, FAITHFUL, MIGHTY, A STRONG TOWER, STRENGTH, A PROVIDER, A SAVIOR, A WONDERFUL COUNSELOR, ETC.

You get the point by now. If you think back on the story of the Israelites and how they were in the desert for 40 yrs. they were there for that long because they did not know who their God was. God kept them there to show them that he was the only wise God. The only God that could deliver them. He wanted to be their God and he wanted his people back to him. Because the israelites didn't know who they were in Christ they acted out and did things that offended and hurt God and in result it kept them from entering the promise land when they were supposed to.

So how does knowing who you are in Christ affect your style?

I am going to share what I call my "Style Testimony" lol.
I didn't grow up in the church so I wasn't taught on how to dress modestly and how to carry myself. My mother raised me by herself and she was the only example I had when it came to style and I am forever grateful for that! My mother was very modest in her apparel because she was a muslim. She never raised me as a muslim she wanted me to decide what I wanted to follow when I got older but she always tried to make sure I went to some kind of church. My mother dressed me until I reached maybe 2nd grade and I was told that my mom did a good job dressing her baby. lol. I lived in an african household so there weren't any talks about sex, boys, anything really. I just watched my mom and whatever she did I did also. She was incredibly modest and because that was all I knew I followed suit and was modest in my apparel also. maybe not by the apostolic standard but I wasn't showing all types of skin.

As I look back at my style and how I dressed I realized that the way I dressed displayed how I felt about myself. I was a BUM!!! I dressed the same everyday to school and I had no style whatsoever! My style showed that I didn't care how people treated me, that I hated the way I looked, that I was depressed and a loner. But my outward appearance truly didn't match the sweet and fun personality that I harbored inside. I really got interested in God when I was in high school and as I was on that journey of getting to know Christ I was discovering my own style. My clothes started to change and the way I carried myself also changed. When I got saved it was like entering a whole new world! My style went from 20 - 100 in a matter of months! When I started to see how God saw me I dressed and carried myself as such. I still have so much to work on but where I am now is not where I used to be and I thank God for that. I do believe when you get IN Christ he teaches you how to do things that you have never done or don't know how to do. There is a beauty in knowing who you are and owning who you are in Christ! I can say that I love myself now and that I have a confidence that only comes from God alone.

Sisters, if you are at a place where you are not quit sure of who you are in Christ, here are some scriptures to help you to learn and know who God says you are.

But you are a chosen people, royal priests, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession. You were chosen to tell about the wonderful acts of God, who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. - 1 peter 2:9 (NCV)

I praise you because you made me in an amazing and wonderful way. What you have done is wonderful. I know this very well. - psalm 139:14 (NCV)

Before I made you in your mother’s womb, I chose you. Before you were born, I set you apart for a special work. I appointed you as a prophet to the nations. - Jeremiah 1:5 (NCV)

17 I pray that Christ will live in your hearts by faith and that your life will be strong in love and be built on love.18 And I pray that you and all God’s holy people will have the power to understand the greatness of Christ’s love—how wide and how long and how high and how deep that love is. 19 Christ’s love is greater than anyone can ever know, but I pray that you will be able to know that love. Then you can be filled with the fullness of God. - Ephesians 3:17-19 (NCV)

The Father has loved us so much that we are called children of God. And we really are his children. The reason the people in the world do not know us is that they have not known him. - 1 John 3:1 (NCV)

The way you carry and dress yourself should reflect Christ! We were all made in his image so lets make an effort to dress as if we are daughters of the King of kings!

Peace&Blessings

  1. Oh gosh...we've both grown so much in Christ and in our sense of style and sense of self. I love how you give perspective on our inward person and how that is reflected externally!!
